Blue Ribbon Campaign

The Blue Ribbon is, of course, the symbol of Child Abuse Awareness, much as the pink ribbon is for breast cancer (click on this link to see the history of the Blue Ribbon).

We want to engage any group that deals with public safety, like at a Neighborhood Watch, at church groups, community safety groups or neighborhood improvement associations. Other appropriate groups might include Kiwanis or Lions' Clubs, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, clubs in schools, public health facilities or hospitals, city halls and other non-profit activist groups.

In short any group where public safety is a possible discussion issue could be considered a Blue Ribbon Group.

We suggest each group simply be willing to discuss child abuse at least ONE TIME A YEAR as part of their monthly meeting agenda .. and we'll send you all the supplies you'll need at our cost.

So .. ready to help? Here's how:

One of the premiere community-based policing programs is the neighborhood watch group, sometimes referred to as the community watch, and our children are among our most vulnerable residents.

Yet few neighborhood watch groups, even though formed for the basic reason of fostering local public safety, ever consider a serious discussion of child abuse prevention, intervention and recovery.

Neighborhood Watch type groups are inexpensive, easy to support, and extremely effective. Most police departments that understand the philosophy of community policing will help to sponsor such meetings, often held monthly. The partnerships which result from such encounters frequently mean less crime and a reduction in the fear of crime in local communities, and they tend to raise the quality of life.

We strongly recommend that group leaders prepare their own hand-out for community meetings, too .. a personalized list of local "tip lines", law enforcement programs, etc, and that they reference associated non profit groups and their contact info.
